ROLLA, Mo.
- Five members of the Northern Kentucky University cross country
teams earned spots on the All-Great Lakes Valley
Conference team. In the team events, the Norse hustled their way
to top-five spots for both the men's and women's teams Saturday
at the GLVC
Championships meet at the Missouri S&T Golf Course.
Drew Harris,
Matthew Shoulta, and Ben Foley scurried their way to All-GLVC
honors on the men's side, while Jenna Siemer and Janice
Laker matched the effort on the women's side.
Harris, a graduate
of Campbell County High School, completed the eight-kilometer
race with a second-place time of 25:55.03.
Harris
was narrowly edged by Drury's Jaime Villa Zapatero, who finished
with a time of 25:47.83, for medalist honors.
Siemer was
the top harrier for head coach Steve Kruse's women's squad. Siemer,
a native of Villa Hills, Ky., earned fourth
place at the six-kilometer course with a time of 21:56.90.
Jessica
Monson (20:43.56) of Wisconsin-Parkside blew away the competition
for medalist honors and finished almost 16
seconds
faster than the second-place finisher, Mary Ballinger (20:59.43)
of Southern Indiana.
Shoulta finished
the 108-runner field in 10th place with a time of 26:20.64. Shoulta
has been a vital
part of why
the
NKU men's
cross country team has turned into one of the better
programs in the GLVC and the team's third consecutive double-digit
score. Prior
to Shoulta's arrival, the best the Norse had finished
in
GLVC competition was fourth place in 1988.
Foley, a Sycamore
High School graduate, hustled his way to a 13th-place finish
with a time of 26:24.68 and a
spot of
the 15-runner
All-GLVC
team.
With three
members on the 2008 All-GLVC team, NKU, which is currently ranked
No. 22 in the country, has
now increased
its
total of
men's harriers to earn an All-GLVC spot to nine in
the program's history.
Eddie Griffin
(21st; 26:50.55), Zach Koehler (23rd; 26:52.05), Ryne Smith (30th;
27:08.93), and Breylen
Derrick (37th;
27:23.45) completed the runners who scored points
for the Norse. Eric Dwyer (54th; 27:53.18), Jonathon Pahren (29:38.95),
and Hunter
Durden
(96th; 31:00.90) rounded out the squad making the
trip to Rolla, Mo.
As a team,
NKU's second-place result was the second year in a row the Norse
finished as the runners-up.
The Norse
earned
a
total
of 63 points but was 37 shy of Southern Indiana's
26 points. The Screaming Eagles are now the four-time defending
champions and
have won 16 titles overall.
Laker, a graduate
of Batesville (Ind.) High School, completed the six-kilometer
course with a time
of 22:56.04 earning
herself a second-consecutive All-GLVC honoree
spot. Laker narrowly beat out USI's Lacy Williams (16th;
22:59.91) for
the last spot
on the All-GLVC
team.
With Laker
and Siemer earning All-GLVC bids, the women's team has now placed
a runner on
that list
every year
since 2003,
which was
the first year someone from NKU had earned
such high honors.
Jerrica Maddox
(17th; 23:03.33), Kira Cooper (22nd; 23:19.34), Rose Morgan (29th;
23:47.99),
and Tarah
Cole (44th; 24:13.52)
rounded out the roster for the Norse in
the 84 runner field.
As a team,
the Norse earned a third-place finish with 80 points. USI's first-place
of 39 points
broke UWP's
streak
of four consecutive
crowns as they handily disposed of the
Rangers (64), marking only the second time UWP
hadn't won
the event this
century.
Despite not
winning the titles in their respective divisions, the Norse had
a
successful meet
at the Missouri S&T Golf Course
and will now set their sites towards
the Midwest Regional on Nov. 8.
The Midwest
Regional will begin at 10
a.m. at the Katke Golf Course in Big
Rapids,
Mich., and
will
be hosted
by Ferris
State University. |
