HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.
- Keith Jackson and Alex Frank each hit home runs in the second
game Wednesday as Northern Kentucky University defeated Bellarmine,
10-4, to complete the sweep of a doubleheader.
Jackson and Frank, a
pair of senior outfielders playing for the final time at the Bill
Aker Baseball Complex at Friendship Field, also combined for five
runs batted in during the nightcap as NKU improved to 28-22 overall,
20-12 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse took advantage
of four walks issued by Bellarmine pitcher Todd Vaughn in the second
inning to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 lead.
Jackson was 1-for-4
with three RBI, while Frank drove in two runs. Conor McGeehan went
2-for-4 and scored two runs, while Josh Moulton added two hits for
NKU.
Derrik Moeves picked
up the win in relief by pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Moeves
also struck out four batters.
In the first game, Frank
drove in two runs as NKU posted a 6-1 victory. The Norse scored
three runs in the first inning and coasted behind freshman pitcher
Kevin Quick, who limited Bellarmine to two hits in five innings
on the mound.
Quick also had four
strikeouts and walked three. Rick Wood pitched the final two innings
for the Norse and allowed a run and one hit.
Kory Lonergan scored
two runs for NKU, which collected nine hits in the opener. Jackson
was 2-for-4 and scored a run.
NKU’s five seniors
- Jackson, Frank, Wood, Justin Seiter and Shane Gordon - were recognized
during Senior Day festivities before the first game. Seiter,
an All-GLVC relief pitcher last season, was inserted into the game
as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning of the nightcap and singled.
NKU will close out the
regular season this weekend with a four-game series at Southern
Indiana. The series will begin with a noon doubleheader Saturday.
NKU is in third place
in the GLVC, and the Norse are looking to clinch the No. 3 seed
in the upcoming GLVC Tournament at O’Fallon, Mo. The GLVC
Tournament begins May 12, with the top six teams qualifying for
the event.
NKU won the GLVC Tournament
championship last season. The Norse also captured the 2002 GLVC
Tournament title.
