Rick Wood threw a two-hitter on Wednesday

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Indianapolis on Wednesday, taking the opener by a 2-1 score and finishing off the sweep with a 10-7 decision in the nightcap.

Rick Wood tossed a two-hitter in the first game and recorded nine strikeouts. Matt Wagers provided the offense with a two-run homer to left field in the second inning, and Wood made the runs stand up as he picked up the complete-game victory.

Wood, a senior right-hander and a graduate of Elder High School in Cincinnati, upped his record to 4-1 this spring. He struck out three batters in the seventh inning to wrap up the win.

Wagers, a sophomore from Hamilton, Ohio, has four home runs this season.

In the nightcap, NKU scored eight runs in the eighth inning to snap a 2-2 tie, and the Norse withstood a five-run outburst by Indianapolis in the ninth to complete the sweep. Alex Frank led off the eighth with a solo homer to right field to give NKU a 3-2 lead, and the Norse added seven more runs to take command of the game.

Conor McGeehan capped the eight-run eighth with a monstrous grand slam to give NKU a 10-2 lead. McGeehan blasted a 3-2 pitch off Indianapolis reliever Joel Zawacki way over the wall in left-center field, and the ball landed near the top of the grassy hill.

McGeehan went 3-for-5 to lead NKU, which improved to 23-17 overall, 15-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse - who have now beaten Indianapolis 10 consecutive times dating back to 2003 - are 7-1 in their last eight GLVC games.

Keith Jackson, Matt Jones, Josh Moulton and Wagers each added two hits for NKU in the nightcap. Matt Marksbury picked up the win in relief of starter Paul David Patterson, who scattered five hits and an unearned run in seven innings on the mound.

NKU will be at home this weekend for a four-game series with Kentucky Wesleyan, beginning with a noon doubleheader on Saturday. NKU’s Senior Day festivities will be held prior to the noon doubleheader on Sunday.
