NKU OPENS GLVC PLAY SATURDAY AT SIUE
Norse baseball team to meet Cougars in four-game series at Edwardsville, Ill.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University baseball team will begin Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend with a four-game series at Southern Illinois at Edwardsville.

NKU and SIUE will open the series at noon Saturday with a doubleheader. NKU enters this weekend with a 5-5 overall record, while SIUE is 5-6.

The teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday. A year ago, NKU and SIUE split a four-game series at Highland Heights, Ky.

Junior catcher Conor McGeehan is hitting .393 with two home runs going into Saturday. McGeehan also has a team-leading eight runs batted in.

Sophomore outfielder Jim Volpe is batting .385 with six RBI for the Norse, while sophomore third baseman Kory Lonergan is hitting .333.

The NKU pitching staff is led by junior All-American Derrik Moeves, who is 2-0 with a 3.12 earned run average. Moeves has 22 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings on the mound.

Junior reliever Steve Thomas has two saves and has yet to give up a run this season in 6 1/3 innings.
