NKU All-American Derrik Moeves

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University baseball team is the favorite in the Great Lakes Valley Conference preseason poll, which was released Monday.

NKU won the GLVC Tournament championship a year ago and finished with a 37-25 record. The Norse also earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second time in three seasons.

NKU received eight first-place votes in the poll and totaled 89 points. Wisconsin-Parkside was picked second with 79 points and two first-place votes.

The 2005 NKU pitching staff will be led by junior right-hander Derrik Moeves, who earned third team All-America honors last season. Moeves posted a 7-4 record in 2004 and finished with a 1.74 earned run average, which ranked No. 8 nationally in the NCAA Division II statistics.

Moeves also recorded a Norse single-season record 102 strikeouts in 2004 and was named the GLVC Pitcher of the Year. He finished No. 14 nationally in the NCAA Division II statistics with 11.1 strikeouts per nine innings and led the GLVC in that category.

Opposing hitters batted just .174 against Moeves, who did not allow a home run last season. In 82 2/3 innings on the mound, he surrendered only 49 hits and 16 earned runs. In addition, Moeves set an NKU record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched with 24 2/3. He was also named the North Central Region’s Pitcher of the Year.

NKU also welcomes back senior closer Justin Seiter, who was named first team All-North Central Region last year. Seiter had a team-leading nine saves and a 0.75 ERA last spring. He also compiled a 5-2 record and limited opposing hitters to a .197 batting average. He was named first team All-GLVC in 2004.

In addition, NKU is ranked 24th nationally in the American Baseball Coaches Association preseason poll. The Norse begin play Feb. 12 against Tusculum (Tenn.) in a game at Livingston, Ala.
