KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Northern Kentucky University men's soccer
team fought with a man down for much of the second half before
emerging triumphant against Rockhurst, 2-1, in Great Lakes Valley
Conference action Friday night.
Braden Bishop opened the scoring
in the 31st minute by converting his third penalty-kick goal of
the season to take the early 1-0
lead.
Jorge Villalba got the insurance marker for the Norse with
less than a minute remaining in the first half off a pass from
Chris
Thompson. The Leon, Spain, native wound up from 22 yards out to
the right side and put his first goal of the season home.
Things
got dicey for the Norse in the second half when Kyle Roberts was
sent off in the 59th minute after receiving his second yellow
card of the match. The penalty forced NKU to play with ten men
for the remainder of the night, and Rockhurst quickly took advantage,
as Tom Heinemann blasted a shot from 12-yards past NKU goalkeeper
Michael Lavric for his 13th tally of the year. The NKU defense held
strong for the remaining 30 minutes to come away victorious.
Lavric
got the win in net, making a career-high five saves. The win set
two team marks for wins, as NKU set a team record with
a 17-0 overall record. Also, the Norse became the first team in
GLVC history to record 12 conference victories as they improved
to 12-0 in conference.
Northern Kentucky now
travels to face Drury in their final regular season match. The
Norse will return home
Oct. 28 to host a GLVC
quarterfinal match at the Town & Country Sports Complex in
Wilder against an opponent to be determined. Kick-off is scheduled
for 2:30 p.m.
