WILDER, Ky. - Steven Beattie’s goal with 8.1 seconds remaining in the second overtime Friday night gave the Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Carson-Newman at the Town & Country Sports Complex. Beattie, a sophomore forward from Skerries, Ireland, headed in a shot from eight-yards off a perfectly-placed throw-in from Tony Ray for his fifth goal of the season. Ray, a senior defender from Louisville, Ky., lofted the throw-in from the right sideline into the box, where Beattie received the pass and notched his third game-winning goal of the season. Goalkeeper Michael Lavric recorded the shutout and had four saves for NKU (3-0), which is ranked No. 3 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. The Norse have won four straight overtime games and are 7-0-3 in their last 10 overtime contests. A week ago, NKU opened its season on the road by pulling out a 2-1 double-overtime victory against West Virginia Wesleyan. Beattie ended that contest with a goal in the 105th minute off an assist from Ray. Two days later, Beattie poured in three goals to lead NKU to a 9-0 win over Charleston (W.Va.). He was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week for his efforts this past Tuesday. NKU controlled play much of the evening (a 25-15 advantage in shots, and an 8-5 edge in corner kicks) against Carson-Newman (1-1), but the Norse could not finish with a score. Eagle goalkeeper Jordan Moore made seven saves and kept NKU off the board until Beattie’s shot off the Ray throw-in. NKU returns to action Sunday night when Findlay visits the Town & Country Sports Complex for an 8 p.m. contest. The Norse begin GLVC play next weekend with a two-game road trip that begins Friday at Wisconsin-Parkside. Two days later, NKU visits defending GLVC Tournament champion Lewis at Romeoville, Ill. |
