CINCINNATI – The Northern Kentucky University tennis teams used strong doubles play to set the tone for eventual wins in key Great Lakes Valley Conference matches against the University of Indianapolis on Tuesday afternoon at the Beechmont Racquet Club.

The NKU men’s team won its match over the Greyhounds by a 7-2 count while the women’s team did one better; an 8-1 victory.

The NKU women’s team (14-5, 6-1 GLVC), who is currently the 34th-ranked team in the country by Intercollegiate Tennis Association and the 4th-ranked squad in the Midwest Region, swept all three doubles points from the Greyhounds (8-9, 3-4 GLVC) to set up the eventual route.

Stephanie Isaacs and Jillian Sturgeon downed Maggie Ashby and Alena Perez-Majul by an 8-3 count, Michelle Schirmann and Kristen Sunday edged Lee Matthews and Meghan Teunis 8-6, and Jenny Hand and Ivana Misic defeated Kelsey Hartman and Ceciley Starkey 8-4.

In singles play, Isaacs (13-5) took out Ashby (6-1, 6-1) while Schirmann evened her season record at 9-9 by drilling Perez-Majul (6-0, 6-1).  Schirmann’s victory wrapped up the team win for NKU.

The Norse closed out the match with Sunday narrowly escaping Matthews by a 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) count, Sturgeon (15-4) winning a close match over Aly Neidlinger 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, and Maggie Koetter (18-1) extending her win streak to 12-consecutive matches with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hartman.

UIndy’s lone point was won by Teunis, who defeated Hand 6-3, 6-4.

In men’s action, UIndy (11-9, 4-3 GLVC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as the duo of Jonathan Hack and Jeff Price cruised by NKU’s Jason Arenstein and Jason Kramer 8-0.

The Norse, who are the 8th-ranked team in the Midwest Region, would then tighten the strings and win the final two doubles points and never looked back.

NKU’s Ignacio Ortiz and Fritz Dlabik as well as Tyler Fraser and Will Knoll each defeated their doubles counterparts by the same 8-4 score.  The Ortiz/Dlabik duo upped their record to 9-4 while the Knoll/Fraser tandem can now stake claim to a 7-4 record.

Ortiz then quickly kenneled Greenlee 6-0, 6-0 to win the first singles for of the match for either team.  Knoll promptly responded win a fast victory of his own by downing Matt Smith 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.  Ortiz evened his record at 7-7, all in first flight action, while Knoll improved to 12-6 on the season.

Dlabik swiftly downed Hack 6-3, 6-3 for the match clinching victory for the team.  Dlabik now owns an 11-5 record this season.

NKU (12-7, 5-2 GLVC) would then win two out of the final three singles matches when Kramer used a super tiebreak set to edge Kyle Prow and Lee Lonergan defeated Werner Henning in two sets.  Kramer’s victory over Prow was the second time in as many seasons that he defeated his Greyhound counterpart.

The NKU women’s team will return to the courts on Wednesday afternoon as they face-off against Xavier University at 3 p.m. at the Xavier Tennis Courts.

Both Norse teams will be back in GLVC play Friday afternoon as Southern Indiana invades the Yeager Tennis Complex at 2 p.m.
