INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference has named Northern Kentucky University junior Lauren Franzen as its women’s soccer Player of the Week.

After a relatively quiet game in a 2-0 win over Tiffin Friday night, the Alexandria, Ky., native exploded with a hat trick and an assist in a 4-0 win over Concord (W. Va.) Sunday morning in the John Toebben Classic presented by National City.

Franzen’s first goal came off a Brandi Doss centering pass in the 50th minute. Franzen angled her shot toward the left post, just out of reach of Concord goalkeeper Sarah Coelho.

Four minutes later, Franzen fired high to the top-right corner for her second goal of the day. The Campbell County High School graduate stood aside, giving up a scoring opportunity in the 80th minute to slide a crossing pass to Ashley Warndorf for her first goal of the year.

The hat trick came less than a minute later, when Alex Armstrong fed Franzen a point-blank opportunity to seal the scoring. It was the first hat trick by a Norse player since Catie Walton had three goals against Bellarmine in a 6-0 victory on Oct. 2, 2005.

Franzen’s three goals equals her 2006 offensive output and leads the GLVC through one weekend.

“It was a great first weekend, both for Lauren and for the team,” NKU head coach Bob Sheehan said. “Lauren showed great composure in the penalty area to finish three goals and add an assist.”

Franzen is the first NKU women’s soccer player to be named GLVC player of the week since Kristen Votapek was honored for the week of Oct. 17, 2005, and the 25th Norse player so recognized since the GLVC instituted the award.

NKU (2-0) travels to face Findlay in non-conference action Friday afternoon.
