MISSION, Kan. – After a pair of convincing wins in the John
Toebben Classic presented by National City, the Northern Kentucky
University women’s soccer team is receiving votes in this
week’s NCAA Division II national poll.
Metropolitan State
remained in the top spot, with Great Lakes Region foe Grand Valley
State standing No. 2.
Great Lakes Valley Conference
preseason favorite Quincy was selected No. 14 by the National
Soccer Coaches Association
of America. NKU
picked up votes in this week’s poll after beginning the season
unranked and picked fourth in the GLVC. The Norse gained national
attention in this week’s poll after defeating Tiffin, 2-0,
on Friday and pounding Concord (W. Va.) by a 4-0 score Sunday.
Lauren
Franzen was the offensive standout for the Norse, picking up the
first NKU hat trick in two seasons and adding an assist
against Concord. The performance earned Franzen GLVC Player of
the Week honors.
Kendall Day started
her NKU career on a positive note, scoring the season’s
first goal against Tiffin. Jayme Light, who led the Norse with
13 goals in 2006, also notched a
goal in the
Tiffin game.
Sophomore back Hope Zinzer and the rest of the defenders
were stellar on the weekend, allowing just seven shots between
the two games,
and none on goal. Goalkeeper Alayna Fontaine picked up a pair
of shutouts in her first two collegiate contests.
NKU (2-0) will
head north Friday to take on region opponent Findlay.
