HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,
Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women’s
soccer team gets set for action Sunday evening when the Norse play
host to Findlay in a key regional game to prepare for Great Lakes
Valley Conference play. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Town & Country
Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.
Two wins against
competition in West Virginia have the Norse on a strong roll entering
this
weekend’s
action. The Norse defeated Concord by a 3-2 score before picking
up a 5-1 win over Davis & Elkins.
With a win, the
Norse will move to 3-0 for the second straight year, a feat they
have
not
accomplished since the 2001 and ‘02
seasons, when they won their last two of five consecutive GLVC
championships.
The Norse are 7-0 all time against the Oilers, with
NKU holding a 28-7 scoring edge over Findlay. Last season, NKU
received two
goals
from Jayme Light and one from Kendall Day to take a 3-1 victory
at Findlay, Ohio.
NKU will open the weekend with the alumni exhibition
game on Friday. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
RANK
AND FILE: NKU has broken back into the NCAA Division II national
poll, debuting in Week 2 at No. 14 in the country. Last
season,
the Norse climbed as high as No. 7 during the season.
FOLLOW
THE FRESHMEN: Two NKU freshmen top the points list after two games
of action, as Amanda Mason and Kelly Sullivan each
lead the
team with five points. Mason has done it on the strength
of two goals and an assist, including the game-winner against
Concord,
while Sullivan
has one goal and three assists to her credit, with four of
those five points being scored against Davis & Elkins.
CHASING
200: Head coach Bob Sheehan is within sight of his 200th
career coaching victory. In 11 seasons prior to the
2008 campaign,
Sheehan amassed a record of 184-43-13. The Norse are now
14 wins away from achieving that milestone. It will also
mark
the 200th
win in NKU women’s soccer history, with Sheehan as
the program’s
only coach. |
