HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Derrik Moeves and Justin Seiter combined on a two-hit shutout Saturday as Northern Kentucky University posted a 2-0 victory against Quincy University in the first game of a doubleheader at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex at Friendship Field. Moeves, a sophomore right-hander and a graduate of Highlands High School, scattered two hits in six innings to pick up the victory. Moeves (5-3) also struck out eight batters and lowered his earned run average to 1.85 this spring. Seiter retired all three batters he faced in the seventh inning to notch his sixth save of the season. NKU scored both runs in the third inning as Keith Jackson and Jerrod Fraley each lined run-scoring singles. That was all the offense Moeves and Seiter would need as Quincy managed just one infield hit during the final four innings. NKU completed the sweep by posting a 12-5 win over Quincy in the second game. The Norse scored six times in the first inning off Quincy starter Chris Otten, who retired just one batter. Lewis Jones went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI to lead the NKU offense. Shaun Erie was 4-for-5 with two runs scored for the Norse, who used a 20-hit attack to defeat the Hawks. Craig Craddock went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while teammate Justin Mundt was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Norse starter Matt Wiedeman allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings and improved to 7-1 this season. NKU upped its overall record to 27-19, and the Norse are 20-12 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Quincy dropped to 27-23 overall, 17-15 in the GLVC. NKU is in sole possession of third place in the GLVC standings. The top six teams will qualify for the GLVC Tournament, which will be held May 6-9 at Sauget, Ill. NKU and Quincy will wrap up the four-game series Sunday with a noon doubleheader. |
