UNION, Ky. - Grand Valley State Universitys Bill Schmidt shot a 1-under-par 70 Monday and sits atop the leader board after one round of play at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional at Lassing Pointe Golf Club. Schmidts effort helped Grand Valley State take a four-stroke lead in the team competition after the first round of the 54-hole tournament. The Lakers finished with a first-day total of 300 (+16), four strokes ahead of second-place Northern Kentucky University (304). Saginaw Valley State University finished at 306 and is in third place after one round, while Wayne State University is fourth with a total of 309. Darren Husse led Saginaw Valley State with a 1-over-par 72, and he is in second place in the individual competition. Jonathan Ehlen shot a 2-over-par 73 to lead Northern Kentucky and is tied with Ryan Johnson of Wayne State and Justin Holyszko of Northwood (Mich.) University for third place in the individual competition. The Central Regional was also held at Lassing Pointe on Monday as part of the NCAA Super Regional, and Missouri Southern State University owns a 10-stroke lead in the team competition after one round. Missouri Southern totaled 297 (+13) to hold the top spot, while second-place Truman State University finished with a score of 307 during the first 18 holes. Missouri Southerns Travis Stockholm shot a 1-over-par 72 and is in the lead after one round. He leads the Southwest Baptist University duo of Nick Layman (73) and Dusty Smith (73) by one stroke in the individual competition. The second round is scheduled for Tuesday, and the final 18 holes will be played Wednesday. The team champions of the Great Lakes Regional and the Central Regional, plus the top individuals not on those teams, will advance to the championship finals May 12-15 at Victoria Hills Country Club in DeLand, Fla. |
